Silver Bells - Jonny BluThe young voices are busy…

…this holiday season.

As we settle into Christmas eve there are a few live performance updates and some VS news worth noting.

The Fresh Face gang is particularly active this season and the pace picked up yesterday with Jonny Blu’s release of his holiday single — “Silver Bells”.

Similar in style to the material in his recent The Ukelele Experience, Vol. One album release, Jonny brings a lilting, quieter vibe to the Christmas table with “Silver Bells”.

It’s good stuff … not up to his stellar  2011 Christmas release — “Holiday for Two” — but still worth folding in amongst the swing’n numbers and traditional fare on your holiday playlist.

Give it a listen and then head over to Jonny’s ReverbNation download site for a free download.

About this time last year…

Jonny Blu released a very cool single for the holidays.

JB’s 2011 single — “Holiday for Two” — is a fun and jazzy original number that I enjoy a great deal while cooking up some winter fare and watching my lovely bride pad around the house on her mission to cover every surface with  Christmas decorations.

Word on the street (OK, from his FaceBook page) is that Jonny’s baking off a 2012 edition Christmas single … very cool, I can’t wait to hear it!

Keep an eye out for Jonny’s new holiday number, and in the mean time go snag Holiday For Two for your holiday playlist!

[12/1 UPDATE – DivShare is back up! Sorry again for the delay.]

When I heard…

Jonny Blu was cutting a ukulele album, I have to admit I figured it for probably a very fun, but lightweight release … more of an EP with maybe half a dozen numbers heavier on schtick than production value.

I was on the money regarding the fun, but could not have been more off base on the production quality of The Ukulele Experience, Vol. One. Jonny delivered a serious LP with this Dao Feng Music release.

Not serious in the academic sense — like say, a flight of Mozart’s best ukulele concertos — but serious from the standpoint that this is a supremely polished and well conceived LP release.

Jonny does a “seriously” good job creatively re-envisioning and arranging a wildly diverse set of songs for (wait for it) … yup, the ukulele.

Now if someone had just warned JB about the hazards of white linen pants and water .. yikes! [Read more…]

Not sure what to expect…

Bobby Caldwell traverses a variety of genres with aplomb. Jazz, R&B, Pop … and Big Band Standards.

It will be interesting to see where he lands most of his song list tonight with his performance at One World Theatre in Austin.

Bobby is huge in Japan — having traveled quite a bit in Asia, I’ve always been fascinated with artists that are as big or bigger in Asia than they are here in the US.

Jonny Blu is another guy that fits into this category … though I suspect Jonny’s doing pretty darned well here in the US these days (I think he has a new album coming out on Valentines Day).

In any event, I’ll give you the low-down on the Bobby Caldwell gig early in the coming week … have a great Saturday night everyone!

Jonny Blu that is…

There are only two days left to vote in The Next Holiday Classic Song Contest and that vote needs to go to Jonny Blu’s superbly swing’n “Holiday for Two”.

Jonny’s far and away the class of this semi-final round, so hit JB’s website and give “Holiday for Two” a quick listen (it will kick off when you land on his site), then jump over to the contest page and vote!

Instead of voting for three different songs, you can vote for JB three times this week (voting ends on the 9th) so stop back a couple of times and get JB into the next round.

Jonny Blu that is…

I came by JB about a year ago while listening to Martiniinthemorning … Brad “Martini” Chambers is one of my favorite ways to sniff out new young talent plying the standards. Nearly every time I drop in on MITM for an hour or two I hear something or someone new to me.

On this occasion Jonny caught my ear with his jazzy cool version of “Babaloo (Babalu)” off his most recent album, Taboo!. I’m going to age myself right now by telling you that I grew up watching I Love Lucy with Ricky Ricardo and secretly loved Ricky singing “Babloo” … yeah I know, wow.

As I dug into Jonny Blu, I discovered something really wild and interesting to me — JB’s success really broke out as a vocal Pop star in China. In fact he may still be a bigger artist in China than in the US even today. But I predict that’s likely to change soon!  [Read more…]
