Dean Martin was born…

…95 years ago today, and the world’s been a cooler place ever since!

As I’ve mentioned previously, Dean was my mom’s favorite — quite literally — until her dying day. Mom’s fascination with Dino meant my brother and I grew up on a steady diet of Dean Martin TV, movies and records.

I realized the full effect of this childhood Dino immersion while I was working on the Johnny Mercer DVD review earlier this week.

“Dream” was one of the Mercer numbers that was featured … They played snippets from Nat King Cole’s wonderful version — which I love —  but all I could think about was how Dean really sang the definitive version of the song!

It’s nearly impossible for me to name my favorite DM tunes … like my mom, whatever “Dean song” is playing is my favorite.

But my dad had a favorite Dean Martin number …

“Canadian Sunset”

I always lead off our “Dean Martin night” extravaganzas (great Italian food and gratuitous wine … all consumed to a 93 song “all Dean all the time” playlist) with “Canadian Sunset” … hey, it’s not “Dean Martin night” at our place without my dad there!

Happy Birthday Dean!

Thanks for all the joy and fun you’ve brought to me and my family. You’re the best and we miss you … tonight is DEFINITELY “Dean Martin night” at our house!

So wherever you are this evening … pour yourself a drink, spin some great Dean songs and join me for a little DM night fest of your own.

Dean Martin Festival…

Hey, if you’re one of Dean’s pallies, and either live in the upper midwest or of a mind to travel for some good old fashioned family summer festival fun, check out the Dean Martin Festival next week (June 14-16) in Dean’s home town of Steubenville, OH.

The fine folks of Steubenville celebrate their favorite son each year with lots of Dean’s music, food and small town festival fun including a slew of Dean Martin/Rat Pack impersonators and a scary sounding Dean Martin karaoke party … sounds like “a kick in the head”!
