I just heard “Pineapple Pete”…

… on my Pandora “Mercer Channel”. Johnny Mercer was just a kook!

And I mean that in the nicest way possible — truly, I have nothing but admiration for JM and stand in stunned amazement by the body of his work … he wrote damn near everything!

OK, that’s a bit of a stretch…

…but just a bit. Barely skimming the surface of JM’s catalog we find … “Moon River”, “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive”, “Satin Doll”, “Too Marvelous for Words”, “Day In, Day Out”, “I Remember You”, “One for My Bay (One More for the Road)”, “Come Rain or Come Shine”, “Autumn Leaves”, “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby”, “Jeepers Creepers”, “Charade”, “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Summer Wind”.

Oh… and I just did him a horrible disservice for leaving out about a THOUSAND other Mercer classics … “That Old Black Magic”, “Something’s Gotta Give”, “Laura”, “I Wanna Be Around”, “My Shining Hour”, “Blues in the Night”, “SkyLark”, “Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home”, “Glow Worm”, “Baby It’s Cold Outside” … to name just a few, and we’re STILL not even warmed up for a full JM run!

I’ve been thinking about Johnny a lot lately as I crossed paths with his catalog in last week’s Bobby Darin piece and a few weeks back with Peter Marshall’s Let’s Be Frank  Sinatra-Dorsey tribute album review.

As I mentioned in both those articles, Johnny did a lot of light hearted material that is just fun and downright kooky. Some war ditties like “G.I. Jive” and other just plain crazy stuff like “Mississippi Mud”.

But none more nutty than…

…”Pineapple Pete” … a song definitely out of step with today’s PC sensibilities as it pokes fun of a guy that eats himself into obesity. It’s funny stuff — “ate so many starches, he flattened both his arches” … “the world famous eater, with the enormous seater”!

I just want to lay it out there for a quick (before dinner?) Sunday night listen. Hit the “Play” button below and give “Pineapple Pete” a legal and free listen … think about the freakish song writing versatility of Mr. Johnny Mercer. In my best Yoda-speak … stunned and amazed I am.
